April 19, 2008
We are anxious for warm
weather and Spring fishing!! Spring is in the air as most of our snow
has now melted
and we only have about 28 inches of ice left on the lake. With a few
nice warm rains in the forecast, our ice out should
come early in May!! Plentiful snow fall this past winter should mean
normal water levels this Spring. We look forward to seeing
you at the lake in 2008!! If you are considering coming up for our
Minnesota fishing opener, ask about our special for that week.

See you at the lake in
2008!!!
FISHING OUTLOOK FOR 2008
The 2007
fishing on Lake Kabetogama was one of the best in recent years. Lake
Kabetogama is quickly becoming one of the
best walleye lakes in the entire Midwest. Twenty-three to twenty-five
inch walleye were caught in large numbers during the 2007 season
with the largest walleye caught out of our resorts being a 30", 10 pound
walleye caught in July on a lindy-rig in 18 foot of water.
The most popular fishing techniques for walleye in 2007 were lindy rig
with leech or night crawler as well as a worm harness.
Most consistent fish production was in 18-22 foot of water for eater
walleye (<17 inches). Larger walleye were caught at all depths
throughout the year, but weed lines in 8-12 foot of water seemed to
produce larger walleye most consistently.
The smallmouth
bass fishing was also strong in 2007. Driftwood Lodge and Deer Horn
Resort guests had high success catching large numbers
throughout the season. The two most common techniques were casting crank
baits and jigging live bait (leech or night crawler). Although this
species is overlooked by many anglers on Lake Kabetogama, one needs to
spend some of their time on the lake catching these beautiful "bronze
backs".
Pound for pound, there may not be a better fighting fish in all of North
America. With Kabetogama's glacier rock structure,
smallmouth thrive in this lake ....they are numerous in number and 3-4
pound fish are not uncommon.
Last, but
certainly not least, Northern pike created many great memories for
anglers in 2007! We started the season off with a bang as guest
Ron Wacome caught a 40 inch pike on May 27, 2007. From there on out
through the rest of the season,
Guests fishing for pike caught larger numbers on crank baits and spinner
baits. Anglers fishing for larger pike
had the most success in July through September using large jerk baits
and buck tails. Numerous 10 pound plus pike were caught by
guests in 2007 and three 40 inch plus fish were caught by Driftwood and
Deer Horn guests.
Coming off of a strong
2007, we anticipate good fishing year in 2008!! Our fishing opener
is May 10th and we anticipate normal water
levels this year....certainly better than the low water levels we had to
start the 2007 season. Large snow falls earlier this winter insulated
the lake
and has prevented ice from being as thick as is was a year ago
(approximately 52 inches). Although it is a little early to tell,
we anticipate ice out to be some time around the last week of April this
spring.
Take a look out our
fish gallery and all of the beautiful fish caught in 2007!!
